Island - Aldous Huxley

From Harper Academic.com:
'In Island, his last novel, Huxley transports us to a Pacific island where, for 120 years, an ideal society has flourished. Inevitably, this island of bliss attracts the envy and enmity of the surrounding world. A conspiracy is underway to take over Pala and events begin to move when an agent of the conspirators, a newspaperman named Faranby, is shipwrecked there. What Faranby doesn't expect is how his time with the people of Pala will revolutionize all his values and -- to his amazement -- give him hope.'

Other titles put up for voting by Sonia:
- 'The New-York trilogy' by Paul Auster
- 'The man who mistook his wife for a hat' by Oliver Sacks
- 'Hymalaya' by Michael Palin
- 'Lolita' by Vladimir Nabokov

Errr, I have to say that although I did try, I didn't finish the book (sorry guys), but lets face it, London bookshops are not very keen on Aldous's Island - either that or everyone else in London has decided to read the book! Even lovely Foyles had...9 book of Aldous and not a single one was Island!!!

So, my post is very non book club really, just to say that we had a delightful evening at the K&Q, only the girls - Angelo was going to a concert and Kev was meeting his financial advisor - being a property magante and all. There was book discussion first. Anjan, do you wear long floaty pijamas? And then afterwards to our usual Fitzrovia for a great tongue wag.

Yes i have lovely floaty pj's. In fact i'm planning another excusion to blvd st Michel to stock up. As fo the book i believe that it was a difficult read. and i have to admit that i did not complete it either... however. i was dissapointed by the ending as told to me by the other bookies. perhaps its best left unfininshed ( either that or we havent any budding novelists in the group)

I also found this book difficult to read. I started reading it very last minute, so I really rushed to get it finished and I guess it needed more attention. It's not the kind of book you can read in the tube!

On a positive note it was different from what we have read previously! Quite philosophical at times and a lot of times difficult to grasp. I had to re-read sentences quite often. I guess you need to be in the mood to read this kind of book.

I believe I have rated it 4/10. Girls, correct me if I am mistaken. It has been a while and my memory is not the same...!!

Hmm, yes this was a struggle at times, but I did make it to the end(!) Interesting, but a little too philosophical for my tastes, I think thats my last venture into the world of Huxley. Can't remember my score - maybe 4?

Dreadful, far too intellectual for me - not spending anymore time on this book. 3 out of 10.
