Norwegian wood - Haruki Murakami

From Haruki Murakami's: The Official Website

'Toru, a quiet and preternaturally serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before. Toru begins to adapt to campus life and the loneliness and isolation he faces there, but Naoko finds the pressures and responsibilities of life unbearable. As she retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself reaching out to others and drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman. A poignant story of one college student's romantic coming-of-age, Norwegian Wood takes us to that distant place of a young man's first, hopeless, and heroic love.'

Other titles put up for voting by Cristina:

- 'A house for Mr. Biswas' by V.S. Naipaul

Hi everyone!!
We had another lovely book club meeting yesterday!!

Briefly, I just want to give my overall impressions on this book. I thought it was too melodramatic with all the suicides and personal tragedies and I have not identified myself with any of the characters so this is why I gave such a low score (4). Also, having read another of Murakami's books this one has disappointed me by comparison. Nevertheless, I wanted to finish the book and found it easy to read. Having said this, I really enjoyed discussing it.

Looking forward for the next one!!

Well,

In an uprecidented move I have upset the world order and voted in line with ruth... The second novel i read by this author has proved remarkable readable and subtle. hence the good score.. The other one i read was someting about a hrad boiled wonderland. fantasy and to me pointless or maybe just too subtle as that seems to be a trend... I may consider revisiting this author again.

Cold and depressing albeit vaguely intriguing I reckon - this book has not inspired me to read anything else by Mr. Murakami I'm afraid. And my lamb was greasy...bah humbug.

Well - this one was an odd one - I couldn't make up my mind about it til the very end. I think your decision to love or hate this book depends on whether you relate to any of the main characters or not. I didn't hate the book but it didn't grip me like other Murakami books. I thought our discussion (wearing Christmas crackers hats) was the best one yet,

Cris xx
